Calories Soup

A liquid dish eaten with a spoon, soups are often made from a base of stock, bullion, cream, or plain water. Ingredients like vegetables, meats, pasta, rice, and legumes are cooked in boiling water until they become soft, break down, and meld together to infuse the liquid base with flavor. Spices, herbs, and seasoning blends are used to not only make everything else in the soup more delicious, but to help all the ingredients marry. Soups can be simple and thin like chicken broth, hearty with a mélange of ingredients like minestrone, or thick and rich like cream of mushroom. Because soups can be made from practically anything and everything that’s edible, the nutrition facts are all across the board. As the calorie chart shows, soups tend to have low calorie density due to high water content, but they can also be made high-fat with cream, butter, coconut milk, and other fatty additions. Soups generally have few calories from proteins, except in the case of some meaty stews.
