Because the name of this food group describes a part of the appetizer or meal rather than the shared ingredients, the nutrition facts of spreads can vary widely. Some of the most popular types, including peanut butter and olive tapenade, are primarily made of fat calories due to high natural oil content. On the other hand, many spreads like marshmallow, honey, and jam are almost pure sugar. The calories in sweet spreads are therefore mostly in the form of simple carbohydrates. It may not seem like you’re slathering on a large portion of your favorite spread, but be sure to watch how fast the jar empties.
