Cereal Products Calories

This calorie chart contains whole grains such as wheat, barley, and corn as well as products made from those simple ingredients, such as pretzels and waffles. While these items can contain different amounts of fat and protein, a bulk of calories in cereal products are in the form of carbohydrates. Due to the health benefits of dietary fiber, such as supporting the digestive system and regulating insulin resistance, it is recommended to consume several servings of whole cereal grains per day. Grains can also contain a significant amount of protein; one cup of cooked amaranth or quinoa has 9 grams of protein. Most cereal products have a very small amount of unsaturated fat, and thus they contain a moderate amount of calories. Much of the nutritional value of cereal grains, including vitamins and fiber, is eradicated when processed to remove the bran, such as with whole wheat flour or corn meal, but this food processing does not remove many calories. The nutrition facts will identify if cereal products have been fortified with vitamins and minerals, and the ingredients list will indicate whether the grains are whole or refined.
